The party in the village hall was a great success and about 60 revellers enjoyed dancing to Roger Dunning on accordion and members of the York Ceilidh Club on guitar and violin. The caller was Ros Batchelor. An excellent ‘bring and share’ supper was enjoyed and the profits of the evening which included a raffle were donated to Church funds. Thanks to Sylvia Haynes for organising this event.

The Groanbox Boys are on tour...

with Rural Arts and will be visiting Welburn Village Hall on the evening of 8th May. Don’t miss this lively North American trio playing with all the guts of Rock ‘n Roll and soul but with other influences informing their music. ‘Utterly enthralling. This is music that goes deep into the roots of popular music. Mixed in here is West African Griot songs, Deep South blues, Nashville harmonies, East European gypsy dances, even a touch of English Morris Dancing.

Welburn and District Oil Syndicate

Why not try to save a penny or two a litre on your heating oil purchases by joining the Welburn and District Oil Syndicate?

The scheme works as follows:

I order oil on behalf of the syndicate 6 times a year, the minimum order quantity is 500 litres. You let me know how much you need by the deadline I set and any days in the two weeks following the deadline when you can’t accept delivery.

I phone around for quotes, choose a supplier and order on your behalf and let you know who will deliver at what price and when. It is then up to you to arrange to pay them in advance of delivery. No obligation to buy on every occasion, or to always buy through the syndicate.

I’m happy to accept orders from Welburn, Terrington, Bulmer and Huttons Ambo but could add other nearby villages if oil suppliers will include them.

The next ordering deadlines are, 10th December, 14th January, 25th February, 8th April. Please contact Elaine Gathercole on 01653 619276 for more information.

Did you know Dot Smith?

I am compiling some notes on Dot Smith for the Village Hall page on the village web site.

I know she ran the village shop and the youth club, with her husband Charlie, and that they retired to a bungalow in Church Lane. She was involved in the building of the new hall.

Can you add any more details? Dates, reminiscences, photos? Please ring me on 618366 or email

contact@welburn.info Thank you. Colin Wells

The Dot Smith room has been decorated with pictures painted by members of the newly formed Welburn Art Group. Have a peep next time you visit the hall.

Reduced Green Bin Collections

Thousands of pounds would be saved and carbon emissions reduced if garden waste bins were only emptied monthly over winter, Ryedale District Council has said.

The council has proposed cutting collections of green waste from fortnightly to monthly over December January and February.

In a report to the community services committee, Phil Long, head of environment at the council, said there would be fewer carbon emissions plus savings on fuel, mileage and overtime.

Currently, Ryedale District Council collects about 900 tonnes of green waste through the summer months, but this drops to about 200 tonnes from December to February.

Staff who would usually work collecting green waste would be redeployed to other duties like gritting and leaf collection. Ryedale Council’s community services committee will discuss the proposal at a meeting on Thursday, September 24.

Online station history is just the ticket

There was a time that the residents of Welburn and Crambeck had their own local railway station and a very grand one indeed.

Opened in 1845, Castle Howard Station served the travelling needs of the general public, the nobility, and even royalty, when in 1850 the young Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited Castle Howard. This was an event of huge importance to the people of Yorkshire and a great honour for the railway company to undertake.

The station closed to fare paying pass-engers in 1930 but now you can take a journey through the station’s fascinating history at a brand new website.

www.castlehowardstation.com

This historic record provides many facts through a time-line of events and an impressive archive of old photographs. The ‘Personal Memories’ page gives a great in-sight into local social history.

This is an on-going project and the website creators are keen to hear from anyone who might have more information, documents, photographs or personal memories that would add even greater depth to this fascinating online resource.

New Art Group

A new art group has been started in Welburn Village Hall on Thursday mornings starting on Sept 10th.

Full details of this, and all the other groups that are starting up again after the summer break, are on the ‘Societies and Groups’ page. This page now includes details of some groups in the surrounding area that you might like to join.

If you belong to a group that is not listed, please send details to contact@welburn.info and we will include you next month.

Village Hall 'Garden'

The bank alongside Welburn Village Hall needs more plants to stabilise it and to make it more attractive.

Pupils from the village school have planted bulbs along to top of the bank and we were given some plants from Bulmer open Gardens plant stall, but more are needed.

When you are splitting your perennials please bring any surplus to the hall and plant them in the bank. No permission is needed- just use your gardening expertise to choose the best locations.

If you would like to take responsibility for, say, a metre of the bank please contact any member of the committee- details on the Village Hall page.

New local business directory

A new addition to the site this month is the local business directory powered by Brownbook – the FREE directory that ANYONE can edit. If you run a business that serves the needs of Welburn and Crambeck residents please take a few minutes to add your details.

As a customer if you've received exceptionally good service write a review on any business on Brownbook.

In these challenging times we can all help our local micro-economy survive and thrive.

Village fights expansion plans

A record number of villagers attended the Parish Council meeting on July 6th to protest at proposals to build a large number of new houses in the village.

The Council had to reply to a Consultation Document on the proposed Ryedale Local Development framework. The large attendance was to ensure that the response reflected the views of the majority of the residents. Opinions varied, but the majority view reflected that expressed in the survey for the parish plan, that only limited organic growth of the village was acceptable.

The chairman, Cllr Michael Cleary, proposed that the council held a special meeting to formulate the response, and a further meeting would be held to table the result. This was accepted.

The council reportedly held an extensive discussion meeting and reconvened formally on July. At this meeting the lengthy reply was read out. No amendments were proposed and the reply was accepted.

Thanks were expressed on behalf of the observers for the diligent work done by the councillors on this crucial topic.

The minutes of the meetings and the text of the response are on the Parish Council page.

Welburn goes online with new community website

Welburn and Crambeck join the growing number of forward-thinking communities that use the internet to communicate to and serve the local population.

Whilst there is no intention to replace traditional newsletters and notices at any time in the foreseeable future your new website will provide more news and useful knowledge of local interest. Some of the content is new but there is a great deal of related information that already exists elsewhere and this will be channelled through this site as live feeds.

This web project is very much a ‘work in progress’ and will evolve over the coming months. To help us deliver an online resource of real value to your local community we ask your help to shape its future. Please take a few minutes to complete a simple online survey and add your ideas and comments. Everyones opinion counts and the results of this survey will tell us what really matters to you.

If you have a news story or wish to contribute text/photo content please e-mail: contact@welburn.info

The site was created by local graphic designer Steve Serowka who with his wife Stella run Welburn Lodge Bed & Breakfast. Steve moved his graphic design business Shoepepper from London to Welburn Lodge four years ago where he now works for a number of large multi-national clients in the south and mainland Europe.

Crambeck Village

A part of Welburn parish, but separated from the main village by the A64 is Crambeck Village.

Once the home of Castle Howard reform school, Crambeck was converted to a housing development in 1989.  New houses were built on some parts of the site, whilst existing buildings including the Chapel, classrooms and dormitories were converted into homes. The village has a tennis court and paddocks and has exceptionally well tended gardens and communal grounds. A few original cottages are nestled at the bottom of the hill close to the railway line and River Derwent.

Further information is on the village web site www.crambeckvillage.com
